Memorial Clash sees stellar field battle at Park Jefferson

A beautiful night for racing greeted 151 cars and over 1,500 fans in the grandstand this past Saturday night at Park Jefferson Speedway presented the 4th annual Memorial Clash. Drivers from across the upper Midwest descended for a full night of racing that saw a surface that benefitted the rim riders around the top of the Park Jefferson oval. After 2 inches of rain caused the cancellation of the Friday night fenderfest, drivers were parked all around the facility as standing water was evident in the infield, the spectator parking and pit areas and a heavy top side played a roll in many races.

The Nebraska 360 vs MSTS feature saw a stout field of cars saw former World of Outlaw competitor Jason Martin wheel the Nickell Construction 82 to an early lead and was not challenged despite a handful of cautions. After a 360 spin by Jack Dover on the start, Martin used his Park Jefferson IMCA Sprint Car experience at the track to pick up an exciting feature win. Martin held off Tyler Drueki and Dusty Ballenger. It was Jack Dover passing the most cars after being sent to the rear to fight back and finish fourth.

North Dakota’s own Zach Dockter was an unknown in South Dakota racing, but he swept into town and stole the $1,000 top prize in the Artworks Graphics IMCA Modifieds. Dockter, who has only won a handful of races, was able to hold off a wicked charge from all time feature winner Jay Noteboom. He then faced challenges from 2017 track champion Ricky Stephan, and finally big money racer Justin Zeitner to take the win. Noteboom was his usual showstopper self working the bottom and then the rim to find a way by but a late race slip up caused the him to finish 11th. Zeitner finished second and Stephan third.

The Stevenson Hardware Sprint Cars featured a wonderfully full field of 24 cars and did not disappoint in an exciting night of action. Tyler Drueke, one of the kings of Eagle Raceway the past few years, dropped in and rode the rim of the black gumbo oval to the victory. It was the Spencer Sensation Clayton Christensen who put on a marvelous show as the former IMCA Modified ace is showing signs that he is getting the winged sprint car world figured out. Christensen has been fighting muddy fields at the farm, but he ran a nearly perfect race to be finish 2nd to the veteran Drueke. Jason Martin was third.

The J&J Fitting IMCA Stock Cars saw Paul Wenzlaff have a similar race to Dockter where he won from the front row, but did so after repeated challenges from over half the field. Glen Jones was constantly trying to find a way by, Bo Lundquist charged as did Brad Jones and point leader Travis Barker even got in the mix late. When it was all done Wenzlaff held on for a popular victory over a very fast Glen Jones and Barker.

Cody Thompson was at it again in the IMCA Sport Modifieds as he swept forward to win another one at Park Jefferson. The man with the golden foot continues to find ways around every car in his path. Saturday it was Iowa stalwart Jake Sachau who finished a strong second but was not able to keep Thompson off the top of the podium. Youngster Conner Vande Weerd finished 3rd.

The two biggest surprise drivers of the year swept the top 2 spots as Zach Ankrum picked up his first win at the track. Ankrum, who was last weeks runner up, was able to get one spot further ahead and able to take the checkers. It was equally impressive that Tony Fetterman who ran second. Fetterman, who admitted he doesn’t have the right gearing for the track, has challenged for the lead in back to back races. These 2 are making waves in a division that has long been controlled by Andy Hoffman and Craig Clift. Hoffman was able to round out the podium. A scary crash in heat race action took out popular Kent Husted early in a violent rollover that saw a torn up 11 machine.

The Fox 620 Sport Compacts saw youngster Conner Brown stamp himself as a new top runner. Brown, who does not sport the full Amish beard like many of his competitors, still races just as hard and picked up a big win over a strong run by Danny Vanderveen. Brian Long picked up third for another podium run. This division is seeing a lot of young up and comers and will be fun to watch as the season progresses.
