82 cars and perfect weather on Liberty Natl Bank Night at Park Jeff
Perfect temperatures settled in Saturday over the Siouxland as race fans were treated to an early bit of fall weather as Park Jefferson hosted Liberty National Bank Night. A good crowd was on hand for the $5 admission price and saw a racetrack with multiple grooves and racing all over the place.
In the Artworks Graphics IMCA Modifieds, it was RJ Merchant who jumped to the early lead, however it was 10th place starting Jay Noteboom that was strapped into his rocket ship and powered his way to the front. Noteboom hooked the middle of the track and roared between the top 2 runners to take the lead and soon had a half straightaway lead and victory number 73 in his sights. However, a mechanical gremlin stopped the white seven machine high in turn 2, and Noteboom’s night and point lead were over. Chris Abelson used this to his advantage and came from 8th to quickly take the lead and win by 1.5 seconds over tough Bob Moore and Sean Barragan.
In the J&J Fitting Stock Cars Road to the Iron Cup Event, it was Jason Ward putting his stamp on the leader chase, as Ward, second finisher Bo Lundquist and Todd Gereau battled it out door handle to door handle all around The Park. Ward was able to accelerate in the closing laps and clinch victory and the point lead. Bo Lundquist, who is kindly repairing the track water truck, was second and Gereau continues to run strong with a well placed third.
On a sprint car racers dream track, it was “The Combine” Dusty Ballenger who roared his way to the front to win the IMCA RACESaver Sprint Car feature. JD Hommes took the lead at the point and continues to impress leading the early portion of the race. A win is coming in his near future. Hommes relinquished the lead and finished fifth. Meanwhile, Colin Smith was putting on a passing clinic picking off cars to finish second over Jesse Lindberg. The IMCA Sprints will gun for a $1,000 top prize during August 4th’s Mark Lloyd Memorial.
Rusty Montagne worked the top side of the track to perfection in the white T1 to take the first of what would be 2 victory flags on the night. Montagne blew the competition away from row five, but Karl Brewer and Josh Blom staged a wonderful race with Cody Thompson as the racing was often three wide with drivers swapping the positions 2,3 and 4. When it was done, Brewer finished second and Blom rounded out the podium.
Montagne again took checkers in the Z98 Hobby Stocks as he rim road the top of the PJ oval to slide past a strong running Aaron Shearn, who also picked up the Aussie pursuit cash. Shearn had the lead despite pressure from Andy Hoffman and Craig Clift, and picked up a strong second.
Liberty Bank racing rounded out the night with Andrew Harris once again winning the sport compact feature, as he just outdrove everyone to the checker flag. Harris continues to be fast at Park Jefferson, however David Bates was right on his tail in the points and Danny VanderVeen continues his strong runs with a podium and Max Bonine was 4th.
A highlight of the Park Jefferson season is this Saturday as the track hosts the 4th annual Mark Lloyd Memorial, presented by the Akron Pizza Ranch. Gates open and 5pm with hot laps at 6:30 and racing to follow.
